TULSA, Okla. – For the third time in as many years, honky tonk country star Dwight Yoakam returns to a venue he’s played to capacity crowds each time, when he plays The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa on Feb. 9.
Tickets start at $45 and go on sale Dec. 27.
Since 1986, Yoakam has released 23 albums and compilations that have sole more than 25 million copies. He has 12 gold albums and nine platinum or multi-platinum albums, including the triple-platinum “This Time.” Five of those albums have topped Billboard’s Country Albums chart, with another 15 landing in the Top 10.
More than 30 of Yoakam’s singles have charted, with 22 settling in the Top 20, including the hits “Honky Tonk Man,” “Please Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry” and “Fast as You.” He’s won two Grammys and earned a staggering 21 nominations.
His most recent release is September’s “3 Pears.” The album includes collaborations with Beck, Kid Rock and Ashley Monroe. To date, it has peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.
Not only has Yoakam penned some of the most popular country songs of the last 25 years, but he’s also found success covering songs from a wide spectrum of artists. Those recordings include Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds,” Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me,” Clash’s “Train in Vain” and the Grateful Dead track “Truckin’.”
After failing to find success in Nashville, Yoakam took his honky tonk sound to Los Angeles in the early ‘80s and began playing in rock and punk clubs in the area, where his popularity grew. In 1986, the commercial re-release of his independent debut, “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.,” hit No. 1 on the charts and launched his career. His debut was followed by two more No. 1 releases, “Hillbilly Deluxe” and “Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room.”
