The Desert Hills Motel on Route 66 in Tulsa, Oklahoma
One of the most classic of the "old motels" along Tulsa's ribbon of Route 66 is the Desert Hills Motel. The historic motel was built in 1953 to serve the many travelers along this historic road. Its 50 units are lined up diagonally, an unusual but efficient architectural design that allowed many large rooms to be constructed on a relatively small tract of land. In front sits its refurbished neon sign which features a glowing green cactus. Entirely renovated, the motel continues to serve travelers today.
